NPH Guatemala offers a scholarship program for children who have limited economic resources in order to reach the poorest children in communities near our home. These children do not have access to education because they cannot afford school fees, uniforms, and school supplies. At our schools, about one-third of the students are on scholarship.
According to USAID with high levels of poverty and some of the lowest regional standards in health, gender disparity is a key problem in Guatemala and is seen in education statistics. Of the 2 million children in Guatemala that do not attend school, the majority are indigenous girls living in rural areas. The need to invest in education, particularly for underserved girls, is acute.
In many poor communities, school fees for tuition, textbooks, uniforms and supplies easily consume a substantial percentage of a poor family’s income and result in a high drop-out rate from school. After registration, the home’s Social Work Department works together with the school to visit each individual home, determine if there is sufficient need, and decide if the child(ren) may enter the NPH school.
The support provided by NPH consists of providing children with quality education, a uniform, a sports uniform, textbooks, materials and food.
In 2018 we will offer this service to 158 children from the community, 83 girls and 75 boys. They go to school Monday to Friday, from January to October. They receive their daily classes, have lunch and leave in the afternoon. In addition to the classes at the school, these children participate in recreational activities such as excursions, community service, celebrations and in the vocational workshops. If necessary they also receive psychological and medical support.
What we offer is a comprehensive education with values that will make a difference in their lives and may have a different future with opportunities to get a decent job that will enable them to move forward.
Please help us make this project a reality and help the vulnerable children of our nearby communities.
